Do you use pure fabric?
We use 100% pure silk organza for the outer fabric and 100% pure silk charmeuse for the lining. We burn-test every batch of silk we order to ensure it’s quality and composition. Natural fibres are inherently breathable, cool to the touch, and provide an unparalleled grace and fall to every ensemble. The natural silk fibers of the lining provide unparalleled comfort, making this dress not only a vision of beauty but also a delight to wear.
What do you mean by “deadstock” fabric?
Deadstock fabric is fabric that is left over from production runs or fabric that wasn't made into finished garments. It can come from luxury mills or designer clothing brands that overestimated their needs. In the past, high end mills would often throw away their excess fabrics after a few seasons, but now designers and other companies buy this left over fabric from the mill and make their own products.
By utilizing luxury deadstock fabrics, we not only reduce textile waste but also support the conservation of valuable resources. These fabrics, sourced locally and globally, are repurposed into exquisite garments that embody both style and sustainability. Each piece not only tells a story of craftsmanship but also reflects our pledge to preserve the environment. South Asia is particularly sensitive to the impacts of fast fashion and climate change, and our commitment to sustainability can be explored here [link sustainability page].
What kind of material do you use in your embroidery?
We exclusively use glass and glass-stone embroidery at Muskan Mumtaz. These are “heavy” beads that are reminiscent of vintage wear, but are delicately scattered through the dresses to give them an ethereal glimmer. Muskan worked in antique South Asian bridal wear and developed an appreciation for real metal and glass based beads, stone, tilla work and embroidery. We do not use plastic sequins, beads, or embellishments of any kind.
How long does it take kaarigars embroider each dress?
Kaarigars take about 96 hours to meticulously hand-embroider every stone and glass bead. The beads are artfully scattered across the choli top and gradually descend into the lehnga, catching the light and creating a captivating shimmer against the soft organza backdrop. The glass beads and crystals are delicately hook-needled into pure silk organza, infusing the translucent fabric with a subtle, graceful weight. This thoughtful construction ensures an elegant drape and movement, enhancing the dress’s fluidity and poise.
Do you have a labor rights commitment to your kaarigars and tailors?
Crafstman make up the backbone of the Pakistani and Indian fashion industries. Without them, we are nothing. To learn about our commitment to labor rights, please read our statement here [link.]
