World of Mumtaz
Born in Srinagar, Kashmir, Muskan Mumtaz grew up immersed in the rich traditions of the Valley’s renowned craftsmanship. Her childhood visits to handlooms for Kashmiri rugs and kharkhaanas for shawls captured her imagination. This early exposure laid the foundation for her enduring appreciation of handcraft and heritage.
Muskan went on to study History at the University of Virginia, where she focused on South Asia and developed an interest in the Subcontinent’s rich textile history, as well as the the Colonial impact on the handloom and handicraft industries. Muskan then studied Law at the Univerisity of Virginia and worked as a corporate lawyer, specializing in the start up and venture capital space.
Muskan worked in antique bridal wear for a year before starting her own line. She sourced 20th and 21st century antique bridal wear in Bombay, Delhi, and Lahore, concentrating on authentic, old-world Lucknowi gold and silver zari bridal lehngas and ghararas. Because she spent one year exclusively dealing in antiques, Muskan was able to develop a discerning eye for dense, quality hand-embroidery that is hard to come by today.
Through this endeavor, Muskan Mumtaz aspires to offer more than just luxury evening wear; she aims to craft pieces that are a testament to South Asia’s storied past and rich textile heritage. Her designs are an ode to the meticulous artistry of South Asian embroidery, reimagined for the global stage and the modern woman.
